Landscapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Around eleven watercolour studies across a sketchbook spread — a river running between dark trees under an orange sky, a village green with houses and a lane, red rock bluffs, and several river and meadow thumbnails.
Two large studies take the top of the spread and nine smaller ones are ranked beneath in two rows. Most are built on a watercourse or a lane running back from the bottom edge, so the page is a set of variations on recession.
Cadmium orange and gold break through the trees in the upper left study, the hottest on the page. The rest are emerald, sap green and slate, with one red-rock study in terracotta and plum.
Dark masses dropped into wet washes so they bleed, with the water left as paler reserved bands cut through them. The small studies are stamped quickly and never corrected.
Watercolour in a spiral-bound sketchbook, around eleven studies on one spread, dated. A studio photograph of a page with the brushes and paintbox used, not a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
