Landscapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Around eighteen watercolour studies across a sketchbook spread — red sandstone spires and buttes at the lower left, a green creek among boulders at the lower right, snow ridges along the top, and two rows of small landscape thumbnails between.
The spread is organised as a frieze: two bands of small boxes across the middle, with two large studies beneath them. The grid of thumbnails is where the subjects are sorted and the two large ones are the choices acted on.
Terracotta, rose and oxblood through the sandstone against cerulean and cloud in bone. The creek study opposite is emerald and viridian with cool grey boulders — hot and cold set side by side.
Flat transparent facets in the rock with every edge left hard, and the creek built from separate stamped touches over a wet ground. None of the thumbnails is worked beyond its first statement.
Watercolour in a spiral-bound sketchbook, around eighteen studies on one spread, dated. A studio photograph of a page with the brushes and paintbox used, not a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
