Landscapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Two watercolour studies across a sketchbook spread — a scarlet sunset over a dark marina with masts and a palm, and a green hillside of trees falling toward water — with a pen sketchbook of heads behind.
Both studies are wide horizontals stacked one above the other. The sunset puts its horizon high and fills the top with flat colour; the landscape below has no horizon at all and is read as a field of foliage running back.
Magenta, scarlet and cadmium orange in the sunset against a near-black foreground. The landscape below is emerald, olive and ochre with violet in the far hills — the two set deliberately against one another.
Both are laid wet in broad passes and then cut into with a brush loaded almost dry, stamping the masts, the trees and the dark reflections over colour that had already settled.
Watercolour in spiral-bound sketchbooks, two studies, dated in pencil. A studio photograph of a page spread with a second sketchbook behind, not a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
