Landscapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Nine watercolour studies ruled across a sketchbook spread — canyon walls and buttes, a stand of autumn cottonwoods, snow peaks above a lake, a sunset over dark hills, and a cumulus study over open sea.
Three columns of three, the centre column taller than those either side. Every study is built on a level horizon placed low, so the page reads as nine variations on one structure — land at the foot, weather above.
Umber, ochre and rose through the rock studies, cobalt and bone in the snow and cloud. The cottonwood study at the top centre is the only one carrying strong yellow-green.
Flat transparent washes with hard dried edges, the darks dropped into damp paper so they feather. The cottonwoods are the exception — stamped in dozens of separate touches over a wet ground.
Watercolour in a spiral-bound sketchbook, nine studies on one spread, dated. A studio photograph of a page with the brushes and paintbox used, not a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
