Landscapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Around fourteen watercolour studies ruled across a sketchbook spread — Yosemite walls and domes, a blue lake under snow peaks, prickly pear, and orange sea cliffs along the bottom row.
A deliberate grid of unequal boxes: four large landscapes at the top and middle, a narrow column of six postage-stamp thumbnails down the centre, and four wider studies across the foot. The small column is where the compositions are tested and the large boxes are where they are carried out.
Slate, lavender and dove through the granite, over meadows of cadmium yellow and ochre. The bottom row breaks that cold key entirely — cadmium orange and rust cliffs against teal water.
Transparent and fast, the rock laid as flat facets with hard dried edges and the meadow grass stamped over it in short separate strokes. The thumbnails are two or three washes each and nothing more.
Watercolour in a spiral-bound sketchbook, around fourteen studies on one spread. A studio photograph of a page with the brushes and paintbox used, not a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
