Landscapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A watercolour of towering cumulus over a desert flat, saguaro and scrub along its base, set on a sheet with three further studies cropped at the edges of the frame.
Four small studies ruled out in pencil on one sheet, read as a grid. The principal one takes the lower left: the cloud fills the upper two thirds and the land is compressed into a band of incident at the bottom.
Deep cobalt breaking through cloud in dove, bone and lavender, over a flat of rose and tan scattered with emerald, ochre and small flecks of vermilion.
The cloud is laid as hard-edged transparent shapes left to dry at their own boundaries, with no soft edges anywhere. The foreground is stamped over it in dozens of separate small touches once dry.
Watercolour on paper, four studies ruled out on one sheet. A studio photograph of a sheet of studies rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
