Landscapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Sea cliffs rising in sharp blades of rock out of dense green vegetation, seen close and from below — a Hawaiian pali.
Upright, the rock running corner to corner on a steep diagonal so nothing in the picture is level. The blades step back one behind another and the sky is reduced to a narrow wedge at the upper right.
Slate blue, charcoal and lavender in the rock against emerald, chartreuse and sap green in the growth. The sky is a pale green-gold — warm where everything beneath it is cold.
Washed first and then hatched into with a pen, the strokes following the fall of each rock face so the drawing does the modelling the paint left out. The greens are dropped in wet and allowed to bleed.
Watercolour with pen and ink on sketchbook paper. Photographed as a page, with the binding and a pencilled date at the top edge.
No signature visible within the painted area.
