Landscapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Two small framed watercolours standing on wooden boxes — a banded sunset over a dark plain, and red mesas under heavy cloud — set on a sheet of graphite skull studies.
The two frames sit one above the other at an angle to the frame of the photograph, and the skull drawings run behind them across the whole sheet. Both paintings are wide horizontals with a low level horizon.
The upper sunset is plum, scarlet, cadmium orange and gold in stacked bands over a green-black plain. The lower is cooler — dove and lavender cloud over mesas in terracotta and violet.
Opaque and flat, laid in short horizontal strokes shoulder to shoulder so the gradation happens between touches rather than within them. Nothing is blended at any edge.
Watercolour on paper, two works, framed in wood. A studio photograph of a pair of paintings resting on a sheet of drawings, not a single picture.
Lower left of each, raypatrick, in pale letters widely spaced.
