Subject

Around nine studies across a sketchbook spread — four stacked cloud-and-horizon strips down the left, a woman in a white dress standing on grass, a park with palms and a colonnade, and a sunset over dark trees.

Composition

The left page is given entirely to four narrow horizontal strips, each a sky over a sliver of land, read as a column of variations. The right page carries the larger studies. A second sketchbook of pen figure drawings lies open above.

Palette

The four strips run cobalt, pewter and dove with a green band at the foot of each. The park study is emerald and cerulean; the sunset below breaks into cadmium orange and scarlet.

Handling

The strips are two washes each — a wet sky dropped onto a dry green band — and nothing more. The park study is worked much harder, with the colonnade drawn into over dry colour.

Medium and support

Watercolour in a spiral-bound sketchbook, around nine studies on one spread, with a second sketchbook of pen drawings above. A studio photograph of several works, not a single picture.

Signature

No signature legible at this scale.
