Landscapes, Surfing — oil painting by Ray Patrick

Two small oil panels on a table — a stand of palms against a deep blue sky above a beach, and a line of dark trees across a wide flat with two tiny figures carrying boards.
The two lie one above the other. Both put their incident along a single level band in the middle and give the rest to sky or ground; neither has a foreground object.
The palm panel is ultramarine and emerald, saturated throughout. The one below is its opposite — olive, sage and ochre under a pale cream sky, with two specks of white and blue for the figures.
Thick and broken, the palm fronds struck out as individual loaded strokes from each crown, and the tree line below stamped as separate dark dabs over a dry warm ground.
Oil on canvas paper, two panels with unpainted margins. A studio photograph of a pair of works, not a single picture.
Lower right of each, raypatrick, scratched into the wet paint.
