Landscapes, Sunsets — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A watercolour sunset over flat water with a single palm crown in silhouette at the right, and above it a study of two figures carrying boards up a green verge.
The sunset is the principal study and fills most of the sheet, built entirely from horizontal bands with the light breaking as one gold seam just below the middle. The palm is the only form crossing the bands.
Indigo and plum at the top dropping through violet to cadmium orange and lemon at the seam, then back to indigo below. The palm is a flat bottle green, almost black.
Laid band on band in long horizontal pulls, wet enough that each bleeds into the next, with the gold seam left brightest by painting round it rather than lifting it out. The palm is one stamped touch.
Watercolour on paper in a sketchbook, two studies on one page. A studio photograph of a page rather than a single picture.
Along the edge of the upper study, raypatrick, in pencil, letters widely spaced.
