Landscapes, Sunsets — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A watercolour of a sunset over low rooftops, the cloud banked across the upper half and the town below reduced to a dark silhouette.
Three registers — cloud, the burning seam of the horizon, and the dark town. The rooftops take the lower third and are read as one unbroken mass with only a few windows picked out.
Slate, plum and dove in the cloud over a horizon of cadmium orange and gold. The town below is indigo, bottle green and umber, almost black.
The cloud is stamped in separate flat touches with hard dried edges and the sky left as bare paper between them. The gold seam is one flooded pass and the town a single dark wash cut in over it.
Watercolour on paper. Photographed on the studio table with the brushes used.
Lower left, raypatrick, in pale letters over the dark town.
