Landscapes, Sunsets — oil painting by Ray Patrick

An oil of the sun setting behind banked cloud over a dark coastal strip, with a second smaller panel of a figure in the surf beside it.
Nine tenths sky. The land runs level across the lower sixth with small poles and trees silhouetted along it, and the cloud is stacked above in ranks that converge toward the sun at the lower left.
Ultramarine and periwinkle through the cloud bodies with cadmium orange, coral and lemon along their lit edges. The sun itself is the only pure white-gold in the picture.
Loaded and flat, the cloud built from square-ended strokes with the sky showing between them, and the hot light laid in afterwards as separate unmixed touches rather than blended into the blue.
Oil on canvas paper with an unpainted margin. A studio photograph with a second panel beside it, which is a separate work.
Lower right, raypatrick, scratched into the paint over the dark land.
