Landscapes, Sunsets — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A small oil of a sunset over flat water, the sky in ranks of cloud from deep blue at the top to gold at the horizon, with the sea a dark band beneath.
Horizontal registers throughout. The cloud bars run the full width and shorten as they descend; the sea takes the lower fifth and repeats the same bars in reverse as reflection.
Ultramarine and indigo at the top through plum and coral to cadmium orange and lemon at the horizon, with the sea in oxblood and violet. There is no green or neutral anywhere.
Thick and loaded, each cloud bar a single horizontal stroke of unmixed colour laid against the next with no transition, so the whole gradation happens between touches.
Oil on canvas paper with an unpainted margin. Photographed on the studio table.
Lower left, raypatrick, scratched into the wet paint in a pale green.
