Landscapes, Sunsets — oil painting by Ray Patrick

Heavy cloud at dusk over a flat horizon, with one long seam of gold beneath it and the land already dark.
A wide panoramic format, nine tenths sky. The cloud hangs across the whole picture and the lit seam runs the full width just above the land, which is a flat black band at the base.
Indigo, slate and violet through the cloud with no blue sky showing at all. The seam is cadmium yellow going to amber; a few flecks of rust mark the land beneath.
Broad flat strokes laid with the knife and dragged so the canvas grain shows through. The lit seam is a single horizontal pull of unmixed paint, put in last and left untouched.
Oil on canvas board. Thin and scraped above, heavier along the seam; photographed on the easel ledge above the palette it was mixed on.
No signature visible within the painted area.
