Landscapes, Sunsets — oil painting by Ray Patrick

Seven small oil sunset panels laid out on a studio table — a large one with the sun on the horizon under banked cloud, and six smaller variations of the same hour.
The large panel holds the upper left and the rest are ranked around it. Every one is built the same way: a level land strip along the bottom eighth, and everything above it given to cloud.
Plum, violet and slate in the cloud bodies with cadmium orange, scarlet and lemon along their lit undersides. One panel at the centre right is cooler, with jade water in it.
Thick and loaded, the cloud laid in flat square-ended strokes stacked rather than modelled, with the hot light cut in afterwards as separate strokes of unmixed colour.
Oil on canvas board, seven panels. A studio photograph of a group of works on the table, not a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
