Landscapes, Sunsets — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A large sunset sky worked almost to abstraction — banked cloud in scarlet, magenta and violet over a thin dark horizon — in a pale wood float frame, with two smaller framed works behind it.
The land is compressed into a strip along the very bottom and the whole picture is given to the sky. The cloud banks run across the full width in ranks that converge toward the light at the lower left.
Ultramarine and indigo at the top dropping through magenta, crimson and scarlet to cadmium orange at the horizon. There is no green and no neutral anywhere in it.
Broad loaded strokes laid shoulder to shoulder with square ends, stacked rather than modelled, so every cloud is built from the gaps between touches rather than drawn. Nothing is blended.
Oil on canvas, in a pale wood float frame. A studio photograph with two further framed works behind it.
Lower left, indistinct within the painted area.
