Landscapes, Sunsets — oil painting by Ray Patrick

Sunset over a flat plain, palms in silhouette at both lower corners, with banded cloud above and a long lit horizon behind.
The sky takes four fifths and runs in horizontal bands; the land is a dark strip with two palm groups punctuating it at either end. The brightest seam sits just above the land and runs the full width.
Steel blue and grey-violet in the upper sky, dropping through plum to cadmium orange and gold at the horizon. The land is blue-black with small flecks of orange.
Broad flat strokes laid horizontally, each a single pass, with the lit seam dragged last in unmixed yellow. The palms are blocked in as solid darks with their fronds flicked outward.
Oil on canvas board. Moderately loaded, the weave reading through the upper sky; photographed on the studio bench among brushes.
Lower right, raypatrick, in cobalt over the dark land, letters widely spaced.
