Landscapes, Sunsets — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A small oil of a sunset in heavy banked cloud, the land reduced to a black strip along the bottom, lying on a table.
The land takes the bottom eighth and the sky everything else. The cloud runs in ranks that shorten and warm as they drop, converging on a band of rose and cream just above the horizon.
Violet, plum and cobalt in the cloud bodies with scarlet and vermilion along their lit edges, dropping to rose, cream and apricot at the horizon. The land is a flat near-black.
Heavy impasto, each cloud a separate loaded stroke of unmixed colour laid against its neighbour, with the paint standing proud of the surface and the weave showing through the thinner blues.
Oil on canvas paper with an unpainted margin. Photographed on the studio table.
Lower right, raypatrick, scratched into the wet paint over the dark land.
