Landscapes, Sunsets — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A sky entirely filled with lit cloud at sunset, seen over a dark ridge, with a single tree in silhouette at the right.
The land is compressed into the bottom fifth and the sky takes everything else. The cloud runs in horizontal ranks that converge toward a bright centre just right of middle, where the sun has gone.
Crimson and burnt orange through the upper cloud, dropping to cadmium yellow at the centre, against patches of ultramarine where the sky still shows. The ridge is a near-black violet.
Short loaded strokes laid in ranks, each one a separate touch of unmixed colour so red sits directly against blue with no transition. The paint stands off the surface throughout the sky.
Oil on canvas board. Heavy impasto across the whole sky. Photographed on a sketchbook of fashion drawings, which is beneath the work rather than part of it.
Lower right, raypatrick, in dark red over the ridge, letters touching.
