Landscapes, Sunsets — oil painting by Ray Patrick

Heavy cloud over a flat horizon at last light, the land already dark, with one long seam of gold where the sun has gone.
A wide panoramic format, nine tenths sky. The cloud mass hangs across the upper two thirds and the lit seam runs the full width just above the land, which is a flat black band at the base.
Teal and cerulean in the open sky, with the cloud in deep plum and near-black. The seam is cadmium orange going to gold; there is no mid-tone anywhere between the dark and the light.
The cloud is scrubbed in broad passes that leave the canvas grain showing, with no drawn edge. The lit seam is a single horizontal pull of unmixed paint laid last, and the land beneath it is one flat dark mass.
Oil on canvas board. Thin and dragged in the sky, heavier along the lit seam; the board's edges are unpainted canvas.
Lower right, raypatrick, in blue over the dark land, letters widely spaced.
