Landscapes, Sunsets — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A road running west into the sunset, with a palm and a lamp standard in silhouette at the right and the last of the light along the horizon.
The road enters from the bottom and runs to a vanishing point just left of centre; everything else is sky. The silhouettes cluster at the right edge and leave the left open.
Cerulean and turquoise at the top through lilac and violet cloud, dropping to a seam of scarlet, orange and gold at the horizon. The land is a flat blue-black.
Thick and square — the cloud bars are single loaded strokes with abrupt ends, laid in ranks, and the ridges stand off the surface. The lit seam is one unbroken horizontal pull of unmixed colour.
Oil on canvas board. Heavy impasto, the weave reading through the thinner sky; the board's edges are unpainted canvas.
Lower left, raypatrick, in ochre over the dark road, letters touching.
