Landscapes, Sunsets — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A small oil of a sunset over a flat horizon, the whole sky in banded cloud with a dark strip of land at its foot, lying on a table beside a Hermosa Beach cap.
The land is compressed into the bottom eighth and the sky takes everything. The cloud bars run level the full width and shorten as they drop toward the light, which sits low at the right.
Cobalt and ultramarine at the top dropping through magenta and scarlet to cadmium orange and lemon at the horizon. The land is a flat blue-black with small dark marks for poles and trees.
Short horizontal strokes of unmixed colour laid tight together, nothing blended anywhere, so every band is a row of separate touches. The brightest seam is one pull of lemon over dry paint.
Oil on canvas paper with an unpainted margin. Photographed on the studio table.
No signature visible within the painted area.
