Landscapes, Sunsets — oil painting by Ray Patrick

An oil of a sunset in banked cloud over a dark shoreline, in an ornate carved and gilded frame.
The land takes the lower quarter with a dark tree mass at the right, and the sky everything above. The cloud runs in ranks across the full width, converging on the hot seam of light just above the horizon.
Ultramarine and cobalt through the cloud bodies with scarlet, cadmium orange and lemon along their lit undersides. The land below is plum and indigo with no warm colour in it at all.
Loaded and flat, each cloud a separate stroke of unmixed colour laid against its neighbour with no blending, so the gradation happens entirely between touches.
Oil on board, in a heavily carved gilt frame. A studio photograph of the framed work.
Lower right, raypatrick, scratched into the paint.
