Landscapes, Sunsets — oil painting by Ray Patrick

Evening over a flat coastal plain, cloud breaking above a low horizon, with one dark tree at the right and a scatter of lights along the land.
Horizontal throughout and divided high: sky takes four fifths, the land a strip at the base. The cloud runs in long banks that step down from the left, and the tree is the only form crossing the horizon.
Cobalt and ultramarine at the top with cream and apricot where the light breaks through, and a seam of lemon along the horizon. The land is near-black with small warm flecks.
Thick and loaded. The cloud edges are scraped in with the knife as much as the brush, leaving ridges that catch the light, and the lit band is a single horizontal pull of pale paint.
Oil on canvas board. Heavy impasto in the cloud; the weave shows in the thinner sky. Photographed on a sketchbook of marker drawings, which is beneath the work rather than part of it.
Lower left, raypatrick, in orange over the dark land, letters touching.
