Landscapes, Sunsets — gouache painting by Ray Patrick
A sky of scarlet cloud at sunset seen over a low roofline, with palms in silhouette at the right and a dark building mass at the left.
The roof cuts in from the lower left as a hard black diagonal and the palms close the right, so the sky is seen through the gap between two darks. The cloud runs in bands that fan from the lower right.
Scarlet and vermilion streaked through lilac and slate cloud, with cold cerulean breaking at the upper left. The foreground is near-black throughout.
The red is laid in short flat horizontal strokes directly over the violet, each separate and unblended, so the colour sits on the surface rather than behind it. The silhouettes are flat unmodulated masses.
Gouache on paper, worked within a taped border — the masking is still in place at the lower edge. Matte and opaque.
Left of centre, raypatrick, in ochre over the dark building, letters touching.
