Landscapes, Sunsets — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

Palms in silhouette against a sunset, two at the right and one at the left, with a dark ridge running across the lower third.
The sky is banded horizontally and the three palms are the only verticals, placed at uneven intervals so they do not pair off. The ridge rises slightly to the left, which tilts the whole picture that way.
Violet and cobalt at the top dropping through rose and coral to gold and a seam of green at the horizon. The palms and the ridge are a flat near-black.
The sky is laid in short horizontal dabs that shift colour from stroke to stroke, each one separate, so the gradation happens between touches rather than within them. The palms are blocked in last as solid shapes.
Gouache on paper, 5 × 7 in. — read off the Fabriano block. Matte and opaque; a white deckle margin runs round all four sides.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in ochre over the dark ridge, letters widely spaced.
