Landscapes, Sunsets — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

Towering cloud at sunset over a flat horizon, with a line of scrub and a single post along the very bottom and nothing else standing up.
Nine tenths sky. The horizon runs dead level across the lower eighth and the cloud is built in two masses, one at each side, with a lit gap between them at the centre.
Slate, violet and pewter through the cloud bodies with apricot and gold where the light strikes their edges. Below, a seam of pale green and coral, then a black strip of land.
The clouds are laid in broad flat planes of closely related value, with the lit edges cut in afterwards as separate strokes of unmixed orange. Nothing is blended; the form is carried by where one plane stops.
Gouache on paper, 5 × 7 in. — read off the Fabriano block beneath. Matte and opaque throughout.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in ochre over the dark land, letters widely spaced.
