Seascapes, Landscapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Six watercolour studies across a sketchbook spread — a heavy sea breaking along a shingle shore under a slate sky, a lone rock spire in a mountain meadow, wooded riverbanks and a yellow bluff.
The sea study is the largest and holds the upper right; its shoreline runs from the upper left corner to the lower right so the whole picture is divided on one long diagonal, water below and land above.
Indigo, viridian and slate through the sea — the darkest study on the page. The others are emerald and violet, and the bluff at the lower right adds ochre and umber.
The sea is laid in short choppy horizontal strokes over a wet ground, with the foam reserved as broken white paper. The land studies are flat masses dropped into damp washes.
Watercolour in a spiral-bound sketchbook, six studies on one spread. A studio photograph of a page rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
