Landscapes, Seascapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A wave in the act of barrelling, drawn and washed, with the lip thrown forward and the tube open at its centre.
The wave fills the lower two thirds and spirals into the open tube just right of centre; above it a flat band of dark sky runs the full width and presses down on the water.
Violet and indigo in the sky, periwinkle and blue through the wave with one passage of teal in the tube. The foam is reserved paper, and a few ochre strokes mark the water in front.
Washes laid wet-in-wet and left to granulate, with a fine pen line drawn over the dry paint to find the wave's structure. The line follows the water rather than outlining it, so it reads as drawing rather than edging.
Watercolour with pen and ink on sketchbook paper. Transparent throughout; the lights are bare paper.
Lower right, dated 092717 in pencil; no name within the drawn area.
