Landscapes, Seascapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Seven watercolour studies across a sketchbook spread — a wide surf beach with a dark headland, three sea-and-sky colour strips, a green sunset flat, and a large study of black sea cliffs above a terraced shore.
The whole spread is read as horizontal registers: every study, large or small, is a stack of parallel bands with no vertical anywhere. The three narrow strips at the top are pure sea and sky with no land at all.
Teal, viridian and slate through the water studies. The sunset at the lower left breaks into olive, gold and cadmium orange, and the cliff study opposite is plum, umber and bottle green.
Long horizontal pulls of wet colour laid band against band so each bleeds into the next, with the surf left as broken bare paper and the dark rock dropped in last while the sheet was still damp.
Watercolour in a spiral-bound sketchbook, seven studies on one spread. A studio photograph of a page with the brushes and paintbox used, not a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
