Landscapes, Seascapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A bungalow among palms and banana plants above a beach, with a blue booth at the foot of the slope and the sand running out to the right.
The vegetation mass fills the left half and climbs to the top edge; the right half opens into sky and empty beach. The two are divided on a diagonal, and the roofline of the house is the only straight line in the picture.
Bottle green and sap green through the foliage, with a white house and a red-brown roof. The sky is cerulean with warm grey cloud; the sand a strong ochre crossed by violet shadow.
The foliage is laid in overlapping transparent washes, each allowed to dry before the next, so the leaves read as stacked shapes rather than modelled forms. The palm fronds are single drawn strokes of the brush point.
Watercolour on paper. Transparent throughout, with the whites of the house and the clouds reserved as bare paper.
Lower right, partly cropped by the sheet's edge.
