Landscapes, Seascapes, Surfing — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

A beachfront walk in the afternoon, with two women crossing the foreground, a lifeguard kiosk to the right, palms behind and a crowd strung along the sand.
The path runs across the lower third and the figures stand on it, cropped at the knee by nothing but their own scale; the sea is a thin band at the left. A kite line rises at the far left as a single thin diagonal.
Cobalt and periwinkle through the sky with a seam of coral at the horizon. The sand is pale sage and lavender; the two bathers carry the only reds, and the kiosk is a block of saturated blue.
Figures are two or three loaded strokes apiece, their shadows single flat pulls. The palms are thin vertical trunks with dabbed crowns, and the kite line is one unbroken stroke drawn over dry paint.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque, with a white margin. Photographed above the pan palette it was mixed in.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in red over the path, letters widely spaced.
