Landscapes, Seascapes, Sunsets — oil painting by Ray Patrick
Broken cloud at sunset over a flat sea, the sun already down, with a strip of dark land along the bottom and one small tree at the right.
A wide panoramic format with the horizon very low. The cloud is massed in two ranks with a lit gap between them, and the brightest passage sits slightly right of centre.
Deep plum and charcoal in the cloud bodies against cream and apricot where the light strikes, with teal breaking through above. A seam of cadmium yellow runs along the horizon.
Thick and scraped, with the knife used as much as the brush — the lit cloud edges are dragged so the colour beneath shows through their broken edges. The land is one flat dark pull.
Oil on canvas board. Strong impasto in the cloud; photographed on the easel ledge above the palette it was mixed on.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in blue over the dark sea, letters widely spaced.
