Landscapes, Seascapes, Sunsets — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Four watercolour studies across a sketchbook spread — a wave barrelling at the upper left, a banded sunset over a headland, palms in silhouette against a pink evening sky, and a figure standing at the water's edge at dusk.
Four large boxes, two to a page. Three are built on horizontal bands and have no vertical in them; the palm study and the figure study each put a single dark upright against the colour, which is what makes them read.
The wave is bottle green and gold against near-black. The three others run magenta, lilac, cadmium orange and plum, with the silhouettes in deep violet throughout.
Flooded wet with the colours allowed to run into one another, and the dark forms — wave lip, palms, figure — laid in last as flat shapes over dry paint. Nothing is drawn.
Watercolour in a spiral-bound sketchbook, four studies on one spread. A studio photograph of a page with a second sketchbook of pen drawings behind, not a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
