Landscapes, Seascapes, Sunsets — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

Sunset over a wide flat valley, with heavy cloud above, a single dark tree at the right and a line of small buildings along the horizon.
The sky takes three quarters and the cloud masses run diagonally down from the upper left, opening to a lit band just above the horizon. The tree is pushed to the right edge and is the only vertical.
Plum, slate and violet through the cloud with crimson and orange along its lit underside, dropping to gold at the horizon. The land below is a deep green-black.
Flat opaque planes laid in broad strokes with square ends, each one a decision; the lit edges are cut in afterwards as separate strokes of unmixed colour. Nothing is blended anywhere.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque throughout, with a white margin round the painted area.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in red over the dark land, letters widely spaced.
