Landscapes, Seascapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

Low cloud over a wide coastal plain, the sea a thin band at the horizon, with a dark stand of trees at the right and scattered rooftops below.
A wide panoramic format with the sky taking four fifths. The cloud is massed in two ranks and breaks to open blue at the upper right; the land is a narrow strip of incident along the base.
Pewter, lavender and dove through the cloud with cerulean breaking through, over a sea of pale turquoise. The land is olive and sage with small notes of terracotta.
Thick and scraped — the cloud is laid in broad planes with the knife and the lit edges dragged so the colour beneath shows through. The land is dabbed in short dark marks beneath.
Oil on canvas board. Strong impasto in the cloud, the weave visible at the margins; photographed on the studio bench beside the paintbox.
Lower centre, in cream over the land, initials only.
