Landscapes, Seascapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A wave standing up and breaking across a reef, its face still green and translucent, with a headland behind and the surf running out to both sides.
The wave runs the full width just below centre, its crest cropped by neither edge; the headland lies flat behind it and the broken water fills the foreground. The one lifting point is the green face left of centre.
Chartreuse and emerald through the translucent face, against ultramarine and teal in the deeper water. The headland is violet-blue; the foam is cream rather than white.
Thick dragged strokes, largely knife-laid, with the foam scraped so the colour beneath shows through. The green face is a single loaded pull of unmixed paint.
Oil on canvas board. Strong impasto throughout, the weave visible at the margins; photographed on a sketchbook of ink drawings, which is beneath the work rather than part of it.
Lower left, raypatrick, in cream over the foam, letters touching.
