Landscapes, Seascapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A long flat coastline seen from high ground, with a town strung along it, hills behind and the sea beyond — read almost entirely as bands of light.
A wide panoramic format divided into four horizontals: sky, hills, town, foreground. Nothing rises above the skyline and there is no focal point; the picture is carried by the stacking.
Pale cerulean and lilac through the sky, with the hills in dusty blue and the town in sage, taupe and cream. Small notes of rust and coral mark roofs.
Short horizontal strokes laid shoulder to shoulder throughout, each a separate loaded touch, so every band is a weave rather than a flat fill. The town is the busiest passage and the sky the calmest.
Oil on paper or board, thinly painted with the surface texture reading through; the edge is torn rather than cut.
Lower left, raypatrick, in red over the foreground, letters touching.
