Landscapes, Seascapes — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

A reef at low tide with wet rock and shallow pools in the foreground, a green wave breaking behind, and cliffs running across the far shore.
Four horizontal registers — cliffs, sea, breaking wave, reef — with the reef taking the lower half and carrying all the incident. The wave is one unbroken green bar across the middle.
Ochre, lavender and violet through the wet sand, with the rocks near-black. The wave is emerald, the sea turquoise, and the cliffs a warm rust-brown.
The reef is laid in flat planes of lilac and ochre with the dark rocks stamped over them, largely with the knife. The wave is a single pull of unmixed green.
Gouache on paper, laid thickly and scraped — handled much like the oils. A white margin runs below; photographed with the palette knife used on it.
Right of centre, raypatrick, in dark brown over the sand, letters touching.
