Landscapes, Seascapes — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

A pier at dusk seen from the beach, its deck running out to the left, with a heavy cloud bank filling the sky and a patch of blue breaking through at the upper right.
The pier runs as a low dark line across the lower third and the sky takes everything above. The cloud is banded horizontally and the one opening of true blue sits high at the right, the only thing breaking the rhythm.
Slate, pewter and a greenish grey through the cloud with cobalt in the break. The sand is a warm taupe and the pier near-black; the whole picture sits in a narrow, cool range.
Flat opaque dabs laid in horizontal ranks with visible edges, light over dark. The pilings are single short vertical strokes put in last, diminishing along the deck.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque, painted to a torn edge with the bare sheet showing round it.
Lower right, raypatrick, in cobalt over the sand, letters touching.
