Landscapes, Seascapes — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

A long stretch of coast seen from above, cloud massed over the headland, with the beach curving away and small figures scattered on the sand.
A wide panoramic format divided by two horizontals — the base of the cloud and the shoreline — with the land pushed into the bottom quarter. The picture is almost entirely weather.
Cobalt, slate and pewter through the cloud with white where the light breaks, over a sea of steel blue. The beach is a warm ochre, the one warm passage, and it carries small flecks of blue for the people.
Flat dabs laid in horizontal ranks with their edges left showing, light over dark, so the cloud is built from touches rather than brushed. The figures are single specks put in last.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque throughout. A wide white margin runs round the painted area.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in cobalt over the sand, letters widely spaced.
