Portraits, Landscapes — painting by Ray Patrick

A wall of some thirty framed paintings mounted on a stepped wooden rack — sunsets, desert mesas, beach scenes, surfers, and two portraits.
The rack is built as a stepped pyramid with the largest works at the centre and the small ones ranged around them. Almost every painting is a horizontal; the two portraits are the only uprights and both sit high, which steadies the whole arrangement.
Scarlet and cadmium orange dominate through the sunsets at the top and bottom, against cobalt and emerald in the coastal pictures. The portraits are the quietest things on the wall.
Thick and loaded throughout, with the cloud in every sunset laid as flat square-ended strokes stacked rather than modelled. Seen together the wall shows one hand and one method across an entire body of work.
Oil and watercolour on board and paper, around thirty framed works on a wooden display rack. A studio photograph of a hang, not a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
