Subject

Six small oil panels of the Sonoran desert laid out together — a utility pole on open ground, a banded sunset over distant ranges, prickly pear in flower, a saguaro below blue mountains, a Joshua tree at dusk, and red mesas above a green flat.

Composition

The panels sit edge to edge in two staggered columns. Each is built on a level horizon placed low, so the sky carries the upper half of every one, and in four of the six a single plant stands as the only vertical.

Palette

The set is unusually high-keyed — cerulean and turquoise skies over violet and periwinkle ranges, with the ground in sage, chartreuse and rose. Two panels break into cadmium orange and coral at the horizon.

Handling

Thick and square, each plane one loaded stroke left as it landed. The foregrounds are stabbed in short upright flicks of several greens against a warm ground, none of them blended.

Medium and support

Oil on canvas board, six panels, the edges painted white. A studio photograph of a group of works rather than a single picture.

Signature

No signature legible at this scale.
