Landscapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

Five small oil panels laid out together — a palm against a burning sunset, an orange sky over a dark range, cumulus over a green flat, a breaking wave, and a long coastal view at dusk.
The panels overlap slightly in two ranks, each its own picture. Four are landscape studies built on a level horizon with the sky taking the upper half; the wave is the exception and fills its panel edge to edge.
Cadmium orange, scarlet and plum in the two sunsets against cobalt and emerald in the cloud and water panels. The wave carries the only chartreuse in the group and is the brightest thing in the photograph.
Heavily loaded and square-ended, the paint standing off the surface in the skies and dragged in long curved pulls through the wave. The brush direction is legible everywhere and nothing is smoothed.
Oil on canvas board, five panels, the edges painted white. A studio photograph of a group of works rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
