Landscapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A wide green valley under a pale sky, with two low trees casting shadows on the grass and blue hills running across the distance.
Three registers — sky, hills, valley floor — with the valley taking two thirds. The two trees sit at opposite thirds and are the only forms rising from an otherwise level field.
Pale green-blue sky over hills in cobalt and violet, with the valley in sap green, emerald and ochre. The tree shadows are a deep maroon-brown, the darkest note.
Short horizontal strokes throughout, laid shoulder to shoulder and shifting colour from touch to touch. The trees are stabbed in thicker dark marks and the paint stands off the surface.
Oil on canvas board. Strong impasto, the weave visible at the margins; photographed on a sketchbook of ink drawings, which is beneath the work rather than part of it.
Lower left, raypatrick, in red over the grass, letters touching.
