Landscapes, Oil

Like this image? I can make something like this for you.

Subject

A broad plain under a cool sky, read almost entirely as colour — bands of violet, blue and gold with ochre fields running toward the foreground.

Composition

Horizontal throughout, built from eight or nine stacked bands of unequal depth. Nothing rises above the skyline and there is no focal point; the picture is carried by the rhythm of the strata.

Palette

Violet and lavender through the upper half, giving way to teal, olive and a strong gold and rust in the foreground. The warm and cool halves meet across the middle with no transition.

Handling

Broad flat strokes dragged horizontally, each band a single pass, with the colour beneath breaking through where the paint runs thin. Nothing is blended.

Medium and support

Oil on canvas board. Moderately loaded with the weave reading through; photographed on a spiral sketchbook of ink drawings, which is beneath the work rather than part of it.

Signature

Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in green over the fields, letters widely spaced.
