Landscapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A country road curving up a green rise past two heavy autumn trees, with a sapling at the left and a deep blue sky behind.
The road enters at the lower right and runs back to the centre, where the largest tree stands. The rise cuts across the picture as a diagonal and the sapling at the left answers the big tree across it.
Umber, sienna and olive in the autumn foliage against a flat cobalt sky. The field is sap green and chartreuse; the road bone and apricot with violet in its ruts.
Thick and broken, the foliage stamped in separate loaded dabs with the sky showing between them, and the road dragged in long pale pulls that leave the weave visible at the edges.
Oil on canvas paper with an unpainted margin. Photographed on the studio table.
Lower left, raypatrick, scratched into the wet paint over the field.
