Landscapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A wide empty beach in the middle of the day, with a few figures walking and two seated groups, and the town running as a thin line along the horizon.
The sand takes two thirds of the picture and is almost entirely empty — that emptiness is the subject. The figures are small and strung across the middle distance; the cloud bank above balances them.
A strong cobalt sky with cloud in dove and pewter, over sand in cream, butter and pale ochre. The figures carry small notes of vermilion and cobalt.
The sand is dragged in long horizontal strokes with the texture of the board breaking the colour. The figures are two marks each and their shadows single flat pulls of violet.
Oil on canvas board. Moderately loaded with the weave visible; photographed on the studio bench with the palette knife beside it.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in red over the sand, letters widely spaced.
