Landscapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A range of pale mountains above a wooded lake, with a stand of dark trees across the foreground and a strip of water between.
Three registers — sky, mountain, foreground — with the mountain taking the middle half and the trees closing the bottom. The range steps down from the right, and the water is a thin bright band at the join.
Bone, lavender and pale ochre through the rock, against bottle green and sap green in the trees. The lake is teal and emerald — the most saturated passage, and very small.
The mountain is built from short flat strokes laid like masonry, each one left exactly as it landed. The trees are stabbed in thick dark marks and the paint stands well off the surface.
Oil on canvas board. Strong impasto throughout; photographed on a spiral sketchbook of pencil drawings, which is beneath the work rather than part of it.
